Repairing a broken sump pump

Sump Pump Maintenance Checklist Before Storm Season

A sump pump can sit unused for months, then be asked to work non-stop during a single heavy storm. A quick check before the season starts can save you a flooded basement.

Quick checklist

  • Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit and confirm the pump turns on and drains it out
  • Check that the discharge pipe outside is clear of leaves, dirt, or ice
  • Make sure the pump is plugged into a working outlet, ideally one protected by a battery backup
  • Listen for unusual grinding or rattling noises while it runs
  • Confirm the check valve is not stuck, since it should stop water from flowing back into the pit

When to call us

If the pump does not turn on, runs constantly, or makes strange noises, do not wait for the next storm to find out it has failed. A quick inspection now is far less stressful than a flooded basement later.
